Hello!  How are you?  I know it has been a little while since I've written.  I've had trouble finishing blog posts lately.  I have started quite a few but for some reason can't complete them.  I'm working on it.  This blogging world is still a little new to me.  I'm hoping I will adjust. :)

Today I want to share a little bit about my amazing wonderful book club that I've been a member of for about a year and a half.

When I first moved to Chapel Hill, a friend invited me to be a part of her book club.  I was a little intimidated to be the "new girl" in a group of girls who all seemed close - but I went for it and have enjoyed every second!

We've deemed ourselves the Wine, Cheese, and Sometimes Books, book club because, well, we love to snack and drink wine and sometimes we read as well.  I would say I read the book MOST of the time but there are definitely months where I just don't get it together in time for our meeting.

It's been a lot of fun to really get to know the women in the club over the past year and a half.  We have become fast friends and share a lot of things in common (e.g. supporting husbands/fiancés/boyfriends in graduate school - the struggle is real).

This last meeting was extra special because the author of the book we read came to our book club!

Kim Church, the author of Byrd, is a lawyer in the Raleigh-Durham area.  She also happens to be friends with one of our member's mom who is the one who invited her to our book club.

Byrd is her first novel to be published.  Kim shared her experience with writing Byrd.  She told us about her inspiration for the novel and the edits and re-edits that went into creating this book.  I was amazed by the effort and dedication that it took to complete this book.  I am so proud of Kim for sticking through it all and achieving her dream.

As for the book itself, I LOVED it.  I'm hoping my opinion isn't biased because I knew I was meeting the author, but the whole time I was reading I was thinking about how incredible the writing was and how I couldn't believe that I was going to MEET THE AUTHOR.

I think the best way to describe Byrd is - Short and Sweet.  Kim has this way of giving beautiful descriptions in very few words.  The chapters are broken up into vignettes from a different characters point of few.  These chapters are brief yet the image in my mind of what the character saw, what the character thought, and how the character felt were so vivid in my mind.

And of course, Kim signed our books!

And it was awesome.

We also took a little group picture with Kim.  I think this is our first book club picture.  Hopefully there will be more to come!

And since this blog is called Kat 'n' Dog - I can't really post without telling you about Darcy.  I wanted to take her picture with my copy of the book.  For whatever reason, that really freaked her out.  She was so nervous to have the book touching her in this picture and she jumped up immediately afterwards and wouldn't come near me and the book again...

So then I just took a picture of the book with her way in the back ground since that is a lot safer.  Silly puppy.

And that's all I have for now!  Hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!  And if you have time, check out Byrd! :)
